Nerds Gotta Eat: Godzilla’s Sushi

Fangirls! As you might have heard earlier this week, Emily & I went to see Godzilla this past weekend. I know it sounds silly, but he was much larger than I thought he would be. I know that he’s a gigantic super monster thing, but still. He is very large. We thought he might like a little snack to hold over his big belly in between cars & sheet rock. So we whipped him up some sushi from his native Japan!

This wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. But it wasn’t really a  breeze either. The stress really just came at the end when the roll didn’t want to be cut and just wanted to smush all over the place. But for the most part, this was pretty simple & tasty! To make it, you’ll need:

Long grain instant rice (white or brown)
Rice Vinegar
Sugar
Nori Seaweed Paper
Cucumber
Avocado
Sriracha & Mayonnaise (optional)
Soy sauce (optional)

First, start your rice. I cooked one cup. Follow the directions on the box, then let the rice cool a bit. While you’re doing that, chop your vegetables. Keep in mind that they need to be small enough to fit in individual rolls of sushi.

Once the rice is cooked, add to it about 2 tablespoons of rice vinegar, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and a pinch of salt Mix that all together, and your rice will be nice & sticky. Then, take your nori paper, and add a strip of rice down the middle.

On top of that, start adding your vegetables. Place them with how they will be cut in mind.

Once all the veggies are in there, roll it up. Roll it tight, it will help stuff stay together. The nori paper will become more soft, and will adhere to itself to seal the roll.

Now is where things got annoying. I couldn’t get the sushi to cut cleanly or easily. The nori just kind of bends and I had to press hard, making things real messy. But with a real good knife, this shouldn’t be a problem. Eventually, I got a few good pieces.

This is when I quickly mixed together some sauce to top the pieces. I added one teaspoon of sriracha to one tablespoon of mayo. It was super tasty and perfect on top.

I had a lot of rice left over, which Emily & just mixed with some of our veggies, and we had a nice little sushi rice dish after getting too frustrated with cutting to make more rolls.

For the most part, this was simple and delicious. Just make sure you’ve got a real good knife on hand. Cutting aside, I think Godzilla would be pleased and would maybe hold him off for a little bit. Maybe the way to a monster stopping an attack on your city is through his stomach? Fingers crossed.
